Review Project Schedule
The team reviewed the project schedule for the coming months; as the team took some time off due to seasonal holidays and examinations, some of the work that was previously planned had to be pushed back. The team also had a discussion to manage the potential risks at the current stage of development:
• Inability to meet project deadlines As mentioned, members of the team took some time off from the development of the project; as such, with the previous schedule, a number of tasks were pushed back, resulting in a huge workload in the latter weeks of the development phase. As such, the team had to decide whether to carry on implementing the features as discussed, or scale down the project
• Problems with AR technology The ARToolkit has issues with detecting duplicate cards. With AR technology, each card has to be unique, meaning that more work has to be done by the team with regards to card and character design so that the cards can be unique and detectable by the AR camera
• Physical printing of the cards by vendor The team was unsure if the printing of the cards can be printed on time by the vendor, as the designs of the card were yet to be finalized. The team had a discussion to decide on the latest time when the cards should be finalized so that they can be sent for printing. In addition, the team has to liaise with the vendor to see how long they will take to print the cards and have it delivered to the team member in charge
• Game-breaking bugs constantly re-occurring Despite numerous troubleshooting attempts, the same game-breaking bugs are constantly re-occurring. The team needed to revisit the technical design of the entire game to see how they can resolve the issues, or if a complete revamp of the coding is necessary
• Feature creep The team wanted to implement a handful of new features that were not discussed / planned in the initial stages of development. The team already faces problems meeting the deadlines with the current set of features, and this feature creep is making the team’s project schedule even tighter
Discuss And Implement Combat System
The team added two new elements: Shadow and Light. They will be represented by an Owl and Cheetah respectively.
The team also changed the animal representation of the Earth from an elephant to a mountain goat for aesthetic purposes.
There are now 15 stages instead of 5, separated into 5 sets of 3 stages. Each set corresponds to an element.
For each set of stages, the first 2 stages will involve fighting minions of that element, followed by a final stage which will involve the boss character.
The team also finalized the phases of a turn: Draw phase, Summon phase (only for first turn of each stage), Card to Play phase, Attack phase, and finally Discard phase.
Discuss Physical Art Assets
The team updated and finalized the card designs, as well as the playmat design. The card art is now full-sized, and now features different poses for each card of the element. The character names are also updated and finalized: Fire (Kisune), Water (Sotong), Earth (Diyang), Light (Ciruttai), Shadow (Hookage).
The team also designed the card back. The general design of the card has stitches on the border, to illustrate the theme of plush toys and to complement the character model designs.
To-Do List
• Start working on the 3D models of the characters • Start working on the various animations of the models: idle, attack, cast, hurt, summon • Design the GUI elements: stage selection, the various phases, turn order, battle info • Design the various game screens: title screen, main menu screen, loading screen, victory screen and death screen
